Whether you are looking for a tasty appetizer that is fun to share or a side dish to go with a roasted holiday turkey, this cheesy savory bread is very presentable and addictive! I made this for a Thanksgiving feast with an unstuffed turkey for my in-laws and they didn’t miss the turkey stuffing at all. Tasty tips: add crispy bacon bits or finely chopped parsley to tease the taste buds.
1 unsliced whole round loaf of sourdough bread
1 lb Monterey Jack cheese or mozzarella, sliced
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup chopped green onions
2 to 3 tsp poppy seeds
Preheat the oven to 350oF.
Using a bread knife or a long serrated knife, cut the bread lengthwise and width-wise up to the bottom crust but without cutting through the bottom. You can be creative and cut diagonally to form diamonds instead of squares.
Insert cheese slices in between the cuts. Combine butter, onions, and poppy seeds in a mixing bowl. Drizzle butter mixture over the bread, being sure to cover the edges. Drizzle slowly so the mixture can mostly run into the cuts.
Wrap bread loosely in aluminum foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. Unwrap and bake until the cheese is melted.
